We thank God for His marvelous provision. . . .
When an opportunity arose in early 1990 to plant a new church in Kona, Pastor Bruce started commuting from Honolulu to start the church as a home Bible study. Five months later The Evangelical Free Church of Kona launched its Sunday services at the Kona Surf Hotel. When the church relocated to Kealakehe Intermediate School in June 2000, the name Grace Community Church was adopted.
Building a permanent home for our Church ministries took considerably longer. Our first foray into land acquisition, a leasehold parcel in Keauhou Mauka, proved unsuitable when Bishop Estate reversed its initial approval for locating a church there. God had better plans.
Shortly thereafter, members of the Church offered to donate 2.5 acres of a 5 acre parcel on Palani Road. We immediately saw the potential of this prime location and began work in earnest during 1998 to obtain a Use Permit.
After safely navigating the dangerous waters of the Planning Commission (which initially denied our request), and slogging through the quagmire of designing a turn lane on a dangerous curve, we finally broke ground in 2003. Serious grading and site work took place during 2004, followed by pouring of the Events Pavilion and Discipleship Building slabs in the first quarter of 2005. Finally, we began using our new facilities in the last quarter of 2006.
